Smart Space Heater Buying Guide

When it comes to choosing the right smart space heater for your abode, there are really four main factors you should consider.

Factor #1: Room Size

First and foremost, you need to pick a unit that is powerful enough to cover your space. Otherwise, you may still be feeling a bit of a chill.

Understanding how much space you will need the heater to warm up will help you determine how powerful a device you’ll need to get the results you’re looking for.

Overstock.com has a nice sizing guide here.  I will summarize the steps.

  1. Calculate Square Feet. Measure the length and width of the room. Next, get out your trusty calculator and multiply those two numbers together.  This will get you the square footage. Some manufacturers list the heating capabilities of their devices in terms of square feet so this may be enough depending on the heater you want to buy.
  2. Determine Wattage Needs.  Estimate 10 watts per square foot and multiply the square footage of the room by 10. For example, a room with 100 square feet will require 1,000 watts.
  3. Convert Watts to BTUs. Here is where it gets interesting.  Since a single watt equals 3.41 BTUs, you must multiply your total wattage by 3.41. Our 1,000-watt room will require 3,410 BTUs.
  4. Consider the Room: Last but not least, you need to think about the room where you want to place the heater. A room with many windows, an uninsulated, or an open-concept room with high ceilings may require a more powerful heater. A little common sense here will go a long way to ensuring you choose the right heater for your space.

Factor #2: Safety Features

The newer models are much safer than 20 years ago, but you should still be wary of safety considerations with your heater.  Safety features to look for when buying a smart heater include:

  • Sensors: A smart sensor that automatically shuts off the heater when it overheats
  • Tip-over Protection: Auto-shutoff on tip-over
  • Cord: Make sure the heater comes with a sturdy cord; never use extension cords with heaters.
  • Certification: Consumer Reports advocates that you make sure the heater is certified by an independent testing organization.  These include Underwriters Laboratories, the ETL label from Intertek, or certification from CSA International.

See the infographic below for some additional helpful safety tips.

Factor #3: Heater Type

Another important factor is the type of heater that the device uses. Most smart space heaters can be broken down into the following types:

  • Radiant heaters work by using a process of infrared radiation in which the parts inside the device are warmed to a specific temperature, thus heating the surrounding area. This heating method can take a while to get going but once the temperature is reached, it will stay warm for a much longer period of time.
  • Convection heaters, on the other hand, blow the hot air they produce out into the space around them. This means that they give off a much more immediate effect, helping to heat up any area almost instantly. However, once these devices are turned off, the effects disappear almost as quickly.
  • Bladeless heaters are a new class of heaters made popular by Dyson and Lasko. Because they have no fast-spinning blades or visible heating elements, they are by nature a bit safer than radiant and convection heaters.

Factor #4: Smart Wifi Features

There’s really no doubt that almost everything is becoming “smart” nowadays, and your heating unit is no exception. Smart space heaters work by connecting directly to your smartphone or even your smart home device, giving you instant and complete control over the temperature and comfort level in your living space.

However, while new and exciting advances are constantly being made in this industry, the idea of smart space heaters is still relatively new Today, the main features to look for are smartphone control [Wi-fi connectivity] and integration with personal assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Some also provide energy monitoring and usage reporting.

Factor #5: Efficiency

Since a key benefit of these heaters is to help you save money, efficiency considerations are important. Look for features that include timers, and the ability to set schedules that cycles the heater on and off. Here is a great energy use calculator that helps you calculate electricity usage of a spacer here at, yup you guessed it,EnergyUseCalculator.com. LOL.

Next, we’ll take a more in-depth look at these products and what they have to offer.
