These are my 15 favorite tech gadget gifts for grads, including dorm-ready picks for high school and college graduates.
Best Graduation Tech Gift Ideas
This coming fall will be an exciting one for my sons. They have decided to start their first year of college in September. My older son took a little time off after high school and will commute to Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown, MA. My younger is graduating next month and plans to live on campus at UMass Lowell. I’m super proud of both of my kids.
With both of them “graduating” on to the next big step in their lives, I started thinking about what they would actually like for graduation presents.
Whether the grad in your life is finishing high school or wrapping up college, this list covers the tech gifts I would actually hand them.
As I like to say in Boston, these are all wicked smahtt picks the new grad in your life will actually use.
Idea #1 – Amazon Echo Show 8
Grad Gift Grade: A
One of my favorite smart devices by a mile is the Amazon Echo Show 8, the one sitting on my own kitchen counter. The 8-inch HD display, surprisingly good speakers, and built-in Alexa make it perfect for managing your grad’s calendar and to-dos, checking weather and news, following recipes, and video chatting with mom and dad. The Echo Show 8 is also a brilliant bedside alarm clock, which makes it more practical for dorm life than its bigger siblings.
Amazon Echo Show 8 features an 8.7-inch HD display, rich spatial audio, and full Alexa+ in the newest 2025 model.
If your grad wants the larger screen experience, the Echo Show 11 is a great step-up pick. For a wall-mounted display, the Echo Show 15 is still solid. All of these displays handle video calls beautifully, so graduates living away from home can stay connected through Zoom, FaceTime, or Alexa Drop In.
The Amazon Echo Show 11 features a vibrant 11-inch Full-HD display, spatial audio, and Alexa+.
Idea #2 – Philips Hue Smart Bulbs
Grad Gift Grade: A-
A Philips Hue smart bulb starter kit is the kind of gift that does not look exciting in the box and quietly earns its keep every single day. Lightbulbs are not a glamorous graduation present, but the grad will notice every time they tap their phone and the dorm goes warm, dim, or party-purple.
The updated Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Starter Kit comes with everything your graduate needs to replace old bulbs with smarter ones, bridge included. Setup is easy using the Hue app, and your graduate can control the lights from anywhere using a smartphone, Alexa, or Google Assistant. Hue also plays nicely with Matter, so it slots into whatever ecosystem they end up building.
Idea #3 – Fire HD Tablet
Grad Gift Grade: B+
Every grad needs a tablet of some kind, and the Fire HD Tablet with Alexa is the cleanest budget pick on this list. It has a 10.1-inch display, plenty of memory for streaming and study apps, and long battery life on a full charge. Basically, you get an Echo Show on the go, perfect for Kindle reading, Prime Video, and Zoom lectures.
If your graduate prefers running Windows, the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet is worth a look. It does cost a good deal more, though.
Idea #4 – Fire TV Cube
Grad Gift Grade: A
Every grad needs a way to decompress, and binge-watching is high on my own personal list. The Amazon Fire TV Cube gives them access to every major streaming service with Wi-Fi 6E speed, 4K, and hands-free Alexa baked in. If you want something cheaper and simpler, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is still a solid budget alternative.
The Fire TV Cube is Amazon’s fastest streaming device, combining hands-free Alexa with 4K entertainment control.

Idea #5 – Rocketbook Notebook
Grad Gift Grade: A-
The Rocketbook Notebook is the rare gift that solves a problem most grads do not realize they have yet: their handwritten notes never make it to their phone. The specialized pages work with the included Pilot FriXion pen, so your grad can write or draw exactly the way they would in any notebook.
The difference is what happens next. The pages scan straight into the Rocketbook app and push to Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote, OneNote, or email. Wipe a page clean with a damp cloth and you have a fresh notebook, ready for the next lecture or meeting.
Idea #6 – Smart Coffee Maker / Mug
Grad Gift Grade: A
There is one thing that will surely help any high school or college grad be more successful in their studies and work: caffeine. Help your grad wake up and conquer the world, or at least their next physics exam or business meeting, with a smart coffee maker and mug combo.
For brewing, the Keurig K-Elite Single-Serve K-Cup Maker is still a dorm-room workhorse with strength and temperature controls, and it is the smart coffee maker pick I keep coming back to.
To keep that coffee hot all the way through a 9 a.m. lecture, pair it with the Ember Mug 2, a temperature-controlled smart mug that holds your drink at the temperature you set.
Idea #7 – eufy Robovac
Grad Gift Grade: A+
Any graduate moving into their own place is about to enter the busiest stretch of life they have ever had. A decent eufy Robovac is the easiest way to hand them back an hour of weekend cleanup. These have gotten dramatically better over the past few years, and prices have fallen far enough that they make sense as a serious graduation gift.
The eufy X10 Pro Omni is the new sweet spot in the eufy Robovac lineup. It vacuums and mops, auto-empties into the base, and even refills its own mop water. Strong suction handles both hardwood and carpet, it works with Alexa and Google Assistant, and it runs quietly enough that the roommate will not hate it. This is a massive upgrade from the older eufy Robovac models I used to recommend.
Idea #8 – Apple AirPods Pro
Grad Gift Grade: A+
People who leave earbuds in all day are annoying. They are also, almost always, Apple AirPods Pro owners. And these are quite likely the gift your graduate actually wants. They remain the ear candy of choice for casual listening, phone calls, study sessions, and workouts.
If you want a gift the grad will actually unbox twice, the AirPods Pro 3 are the move. The newest Pro model adds workout-friendly sensors, live translation, dramatically better active noise cancellation, and USB-C charging. Both my sons have older AirPods and love them. The Pro 3s are the version I would gift now.
Idea #9 – Apple Watch Ultra
Grad Gift Grade: A
The grad in your life is about to manage more calendars, alarms, and texts than ever. A smartwatch handles all of it without pulling the phone out every five minutes, and the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the one I would gift today.
Beyond keeping track of time, a smartwatch tracks health metrics like heart rate, sleep, and overall fitness. It plays music, runs without the phone for workouts, and even taps to pay for that latte at Starbucks. The Ultra 3 adds satellite messaging, 5G connectivity, and Apple’s biggest, brightest watch display. Built-in precision GPS will help them find their way around campus or to the new office.
Idea #10 – Aura Digital Frame
Grad Gift Grade: A
For a graduate moving into a dorm or first apartment, nothing beats a wall of family photos, without the actual wall of photos. An Aura digital frame lets parents, grandparents, and friends send pictures straight to the frame from anywhere, so your grad always has fresh memories on the desk.
It is the kind of gift that hits emotionally on day one and keeps giving every time someone uploads a new shot. The Aura digital frame I would hand to my own kids is the one linked below: unlimited storage, simple sharing, and dead-simple setup for the people sending photos.

Idea #11 – Anker Prime Power Bank
Grad Gift Grade: A
A dead phone in the middle of a lecture, on a bus, or at the airport heading home for break is a graduation gift problem waiting to happen. The Anker Prime Power Bank is the high-wattage, multi-port battery that solves that problem for years, not weeks.
The Anker Prime Power Bank charges a MacBook, iPhone, and AirPods at the same time, recharges itself quickly, and has a small display that tells you exactly how much juice is left. This is the boring-but-essential gift your grad will quietly thank you for every single week.
Idea #12 – Ring Indoor Cam
Grad Gift Grade: B+
Off-campus apartments, shared dorms, and first jobs all come with one shared concern: who is touching my stuff? A Ring Indoor Cam is a cheap, plug-and-play answer.
The Ring Indoor Cam ships with two-way talk, motion alerts to the Ring app, and a physical privacy shutter so your grad can flip it closed any time they want. It pairs with Alexa for live view on any Echo Show in the apartment, perfect for checking on pets, packages, or roommate borrowing habits.
Idea #13 – Kindle Paperwhite
Grad Gift Grade: A+
The cheapest way to take the bite out of college textbook prices is the Kindle Paperwhite. The latest Kindle Paperwhite has a glare-free display, long battery life, USB-C charging, and waterproof construction for poolside or bathtub study sessions.
Between Kindle Unlimited, library Libby loans, and Amazon textbook rentals, this is a gift that can pay itself back inside the first semester. It is a no-brainer for any college-bound grad who reads.
Idea #14 – Tile Pro Tracker
Grad Gift Grade: B+
College students lose things. The Tile Pro Tracker is the answer to keys, wallets, backpacks, water bottles, and the laptop bag they swore they left in the library.
A two-pack of Tile Pro Trackers covers the highest-risk grad-bag items — keys and a laptop bag — with replaceable batteries, strong Bluetooth range, and a large community find network. Unlike AirTags, Tile works for Android grads too, which makes it the cross-platform pick.
Idea #15 – Aqara Hub M3
Grad Gift Grade: B
For the grad who is already deep into smart home, or the one who is about to be, the Aqara Hub M3 is the brain that makes everything talk to everything.
The Aqara Hub M3 is a Matter controller, Zigbee hub, Thread border router, and Alexa/Google/HomeKit bridge all in one. Drop it into a dorm or first apartment and suddenly smart bulbs, plugs, sensors, and locks can work together across brands. This is the geeky pick of the list, but for the right grad it is the smartest smart-home gift here.
